Former presidential media aide, Reno Omokri has called on the police to release members of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) who were picked up after arresting suspected Fulani warlord, Iskilu Wakili.

Omokri rather called on the Police to arrest and prosecute prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi.

The call comes after the Oyo State police command, on Sunday, confirmed the detention of some members of the Odua Peoples Congress who arrested notorious Fulani warlord, Iskilu Wakili.

The development was confirmed in a statement released by the command on Sunday.

The statement titled, ‘Oyo police assures of diligent prosecution of suspected criminals’, was signed by the command spokesman, Fadeyi Olugbenga.

Omokri in his reaction to the action by the Police, said the arrest of the OPC members is provocative. He also dragged President Muhammadu Buhari into the matter, warning him not to set Nigeria on fire.

He wrote on Twitter on Sunday night: “I call on the @PoliceNG to IMMEDIATELY release men of the OPC involved in the arrest of the dreaded bandit, Iskilu Wakili. If the police want to arrest, they should arrest Gumi. It is no crime to arrest a criminal. General @MBuhari should not set Nigeria on fire.”

He added that: “The arrest of the OPC men who arrested dreaded bandit, Wakili, is provocative. @MBuhari
should not set Nigeria on fire. Actions like this show he is tacitly giving approval to these bandits because they share the same ethnicity and religion as him.”

It will be recalled as reported by Naija News that a joint team of Ibarapa security operatives, including Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Vigilante, and other groups arrested the notorious Fulani herdsmen terrorizing Oyo communities, Iskilu Wakili.

Wakili who is notorious for killing and kidnapping several people in Ibarapa, Oke Ogun, Oyo State was arrested after several attempts resulting in a gun battle.

Recall that Wakili’s second in command Isiaka Mohammed was recently arrested alongside four others.

Confirming Wakili’s arrest, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, said the Fulani warlord was arrested around 7 am on Sunday.

Adams stated that the herdsman had been handed over to the Divisional Police Office in Igbo Ora, Oyo State.

The statement was titled, “Insecurity: Gani Adams applauds OPC, Ibarapa joint security team over the arrest of Kidnap kingpin Wakilu, three others in Ibarapa’.

Adams said, “I am happy that the notorious kidnapper had been captured alongside three others. It is a good development and a positive signal to other criminal elements that the South-West is no longer an abode for bandits, kidnappers, and criminal herders.

“I commend all the members of the joint security team that has made this possible because with the video at my disposal, it was purely a neat job.

“With this development, I think the whole world will agree with me that the fight against insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry needs native intelligence, information gathering, and grassroots support from local securities and operatives.

“As I have said earlier that the effort to rid the South-West of bandits and kidnappers was to complement the efforts of the police and in doing that, it is also very important for the police to support the local security operatives because they are always at the grassroots and they have their ears to the ground on local security matters.”
