Stakeholders and insurers are reportedly in a dialogue towards the settlement of all victims of the Akungba-Akoko in Ondo State accident that involved the Dangote truck.

Weeks after the January 23 incident, Dangote cement Plc disclosed on Thursday, March 4 that work is in progress to compensate all victims of the tragic event.

The spokesman for the Dangote Group, Mr Anthony Chiejina, was quoted in a communique as saying that the initial sum of N500,000 given to each family of the eight students killed in the accident was just to offset burial and incidental expenses their families incurred.

According to him, the company acted with dispatch to disburse the money to defray the burial expenses, as the bereaved families could not have been waiting for insurance compensations before burying their loved ones.

Chiejina said the company is saddened with the development which has claimed the lives of many.

His statement reads: “The N500,000 paid to the families of the deceased was meant for the burial and incidental expenses.

“The Dangote insurers are currently meeting with all stakeholders for settlement of all medical expenses incurred as a result of the accident, payment of disability benefits, compensation for damaged properties and payment of death benefits to families of the deceased.”

He disclosed further that the management after reaching an agreement with stakeholders will compensate the victims beyond the initial money, adding that other benefits will be given to the bereaved families.
