Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has reiterated that Fulani herders have no option but to go around with AK-47 for self-defence.

The governor while discussing insecurity matters on Channels Television programme on Friday (today), said bandits terrorising the North are not only from the Fulani ethnic group. Mohammed alleged that the Igbo, Yoruba and the Hausa speaking people are the real beneficiaries of the illicit trade.

Speaking further on the current spate of insecurity in the northern region and controversies on Fulani herders, Mohammed said: “These bandits are not only Fulanis.

“In fact, they are terrorising the Fulanis but they have Fulani miscreants within them; they have Hausa, they have Igbo suppliers; they have Yorubas. They’re people really benefitting from the illicit trade.”

He stated again that the Fulani had to be going about their activities with ammunition for self-defence because they are being attacked and killed by cattle rustlers.

He added: “I have not changed my opinion on the issue; I was not defending herdsmen,”

“It seems the security agencies have thrown in the towel; are mesmerized on the security situation in the country,” the Governor added.

Meanwhile, former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa has said northern elders are very angry with President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that they will not be silent because their person from the North is in power.

He condemned the Buhari led government over his inability to secure the life of citizens from deadly attacks by criminal groups, especially in the North.
