Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, there are increasing rumours that former President Goodluck Jonathan will defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The latest of such is contained in a statement by the Movement For The Actualisation Of A Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB) which alleged that Jonathan has received assurances of support from the Northern caliphate for him to return to power in 2023.

The MASSOB statement signed and made available to newsmen by its leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu noted that the political arrangements for the defection are already in top gear.

It however warned that the southeast will not support the move.

The statement noted: “Goodluck Jonathan will soon declare for APC because of the promise and assurances given to him by the Northern caliphate. These political arrangements and strategies will fail because Nigeria is heavily pregnant, only the people of Southeast will determine if she will live or die because we hold the lifewire of Nigeria.”

“MASSOB is not against APC, neither does it support PDP. We have respected Igbo leaders in both APC and PDP whom we equally respect. APC and PDP should not push the people of Southeast to the wall because Ndigbo holds the survival and destruction of Nigeria.”

“The Northern caliphate can no longer dictate the political future of Nigeria again. The political reality of 2023 will prove them wrong because Ndigbo will take another political dimension that will determine the next step for Nigeria.”

The statement added that former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode will also move to the APC as part of plans for building a solid base within APC for Jonathan.

It alleged further that if Jonathan fails to clinch the 2023 presidential ticket, Fani-Kayode will then switch support to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who is also said to be in the race for the presidential ticket.

“Fani-Kayode’s inroad to APC is primarily to support and campaign for the presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu as a fellow Yoruba man. They are working seriously even to convince other top Yoruba leaders, including former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Wole Soyinka, to support the presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu for the sake of Yoruba political interest in Nigeria.”

“The second reason for Femi Fani-Kayode’s defection to APC is to campaign for the former president Goodluck Jonathan if Bola Tinubu’s presidential ambition crashes,” the group noted.

Meanwhile, former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, says the opposition party is the only option that can save the country from her current mess.

He said this on Thursday while playing host to members of the party’s National Working Committee who paid him a courtesy visit at his Abuja residence.

The PDP chieftain thanked the party leadership for the visit and commended the Uche Secondus-led committee for standing by him during his trial.

Metuh, who just returned from the United Kingdom where he had gone for medical treatment, stated that the PDP remains the viable option to restore hope in Nigeria and revamp the faith Nigerians have in the nation.
