JUST IN: Court Stops NUT From Embarking On Strike Action In Edo

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT has been issued a restraining order from proceeding with its planned industrial action in Edo State.

Naija News understands that the union had earlier charged its members not to resume school on Monday when other schools in the State reopened following the long break caused by COVID -19 pandemic.

However, on Monday, February 1, the state National Industrial Court after going through submissions put forward by the Edo State Government and the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) as applicants in a case with Suit No. NICN/BEN/04/2021 through the Edo State Solicitor-General, Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, ordered that the strike action be abolished.

Delivering her ruling today at the court sitting, Hon. Justice A. A. Adewemimo ordered that the NUT Chairman, his Assistant Secretary-General either acting for themselves or through their agents should do away with any plan of embarking on strike action pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice, which is fixed for Tuesday, February 9th, 2021.

The defendants in the suit are Chairman, NUT, Edo State, Pius O. Okhuleliegbe; Assistant Secretary-General, NUT, Edo State, Moni Mike Modesty Itua, Naija News understands.

Meanwhile, Naija News had reported a fire outbreak at the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto on Monday, February 1, 2021.
