IGP Adamu Issues Fresh Directives To Police, Vigilante Groups

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has again warned officers of the force against setting up checkpoints in terms of roadblocks across the states.

Speaking on a live interview with the Channels Television on Monday, January 25, Adamu warned that any officer caught in the act, or any form of illegal duty would answer for it.

The IGP ordered that arms should be withdrawn from all vigilante groups, noting that it is illegal for the local security men to carry arms about. According to him, their work is to gather intelligence and make them available to the police.

Naija News understands that vigilante groups have been helpful in curbing some criminal activities in their various levels across the state, with the use of arms. However, the police IG has said that they are carrying illegal arms.

“Vigilante groups are supposed to be working with the communities, gather intelligence and pass to the police,” Adamu noted.

He added that “Vigilante groups are not supposed to carry arms…any of them that does so is carrying illegal arms.

“Up till today, checkpoints in terms of roadblocks are banned. Any police officer that engages in that is doing an illegal duty and if he is caught, he would answer for it,” the IGP reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) says the establishment of the Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, cannot solve the insecurity going on in the South West.

Naija News reports that NEF stated this in a statement released on Monday by its Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.
