Bandits Kill Policeman, Soldier In Delta
The Delta State Police Command on Monday confirmed the killing of a policeman and a soldier by gunmen at a military checkpoint at Oton Area of Sapele on Sunday night.
It was disclosed that the security operatives were shot by armed bandits at the military post at the entrance of the community through the river.
The spokesperson of the command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the development while speaking with journalists in Warri on Monday.
He said, “two operatives were killed, adding that “we are investigating the incident”.
Onovwakpoyeya further stated that no one has been apprehended in connection with the attack as at the time of filing this report.
A source which spoke on the incident with Punch noted that the bandits stormed the community through the Oton River in Sapele to kidnap some prominent persons in the area.
It was disclosed that the security operatives were shot while repelling the bandits from assessing the community.
The source, however, did not disclose if any bandits were killed during the attack which has now caused tension in the community.
Military troops from the 19 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Moko, have been reportedly deployed to the area.
