Ogoni Clean Up: FG Gave Fake Promise To Rivers Community – Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has accused the federal government of Nigeria of making fake promises to the people of the state concerning the clean up of the Ogoni area.

The governor made the submission during the commissioning of the Sakpenwa-Bori road in Khana Local Government Area of the state, warning the people to beware of such ‘audio’ promises from politicians as the 2023 general elections draw nearer.

The Governor, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), added further that such fake promises is what differentiates his party from the All Progressives Congress (APC), and promised to continue to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.

He said: “I am not like the Federal Government. They promised you they will do Ogoni clean up. Has it been cleaned? I promised you road, have I done it? So you can see the difference between our party and their own party. The difference is clear.

“When election comes in 2023, they will start another clean up. You people don’t even ask questions. Why is it a year to the election that Ogoni clean up will always commence? Now that there is no election are they doing clean up now? Watch from next year they will start clean up.”

It will be recalled the Ogoni clean-up project was flagged off in 2016 by the current administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari but Naija News understands not much progress has been made since the flag-off.

Back in 2020, Governor Wike had told the federal government when he hosted the Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar at the Government House in Port Harcourt that much progress can’t be recorded on the project until the federal government stops playing politics with the clean-up efforts.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, on Tuesday, noted that the Federal Government did not increase electricity tariffs but adjusted some bands for users to pay what they are supposed to pay.

Keyamo disclosed this while speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today programme, on Tuesday night.

The Minister further stated that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission did not consult him or other members of the committee working on the new electricity tariffs before announcing the development.
