Fire Kills 134 People, Ravage Properties Worth N635m In Kano

Kano State Fire Service has recalled tragedies that happened in the state between January 1 and December 31, 2020.

Speaking with newsmen in Kano on Tuesday, January 5, the state Public Relations Officer of the service, Alhaji Saidu Muhammad revealed that no fewer than 134 people died while about N635 million worth of properties were destroyed by fire in the last year.

The PRO explained further that the service had saved property worth N2.56 billion and 1,077 lives in 786 fire outbreaks in the last twelve months.

“Most of the fire outbreaks were caused by carelessness in handling cooking gas, use of inferior electrical appliances and poor wiring in homes,” he said.

He added: “About 134 lives and property worth N635 million were lost to fire in the period under review.”

Naija News understands that the service recorded 693 rescue calls out of which 184 are false alarms.

While assuring residents of the service’s commitment to do better in 2021, Muhammad noted that the service plans to retrain its 350 staff in 2021 for effective performance.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS has warned 100 travellers whose passports were unveiled by the Federal Government earlier for failing to undergo compulsory COVID-19 test, against further violation of the restriction.

Naija News reports that Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha published the details of the affected travellers during the last weekend, noting that their restriction starts from January 1, 2021, and would last till June 30, 2021.
