NYSC Roles Out New Policy For Prospective Members

A corp member has died after the vehicle in which he was travelling was attacked by armed robbers along the Jere-Abuja expressway, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed on Wednesday.

The corps member identified as Bomoi Sulaimon Yusuf just completed the 2020 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1B orientation programme at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede, Osun State, on Tuesday and was travelling along with some other corps members when the unfortunate incident occurred, Naija News gathered.

The NYSC management in a statement on Wednesday explained that the late Yusuf died as a result of sporadic shooting by the armed robbers who attacked their vehicle.

The statement also explained that contrary to some reports, no corps member was abducted during the attack but some who sustained injuries are receiving treatment at the hospital while some others have already been discharged.

While mourning the departed, the NYSC also prayed for the quick recovery of those hospitalized, noting that the family of the dead corps member has been notified.

The statement on the matter titled; RE: BANDITS ABDUCT CORPS MEMBERS, SHOOT ONE TO DEATH (sic) ALONG ABUJA VIA LOKOJA ROAD reads: “The attention of NYSC Management has been drawn to the news with the above caption making the rounds concerning the death, and alleged abduction of some Corps Members travelling from Osun State by kidnappers.”

“The true position is that, indeed, 17 Corps Members that completed the 2020 Batch Batch “B” Stream 1B Orientation programme at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede, Osun State, on Tuesday, 22nd December, 2020 boarded vehicles heading towards the northern part of the country.”

“Tragically, along Jere-Abuja Expressway, they were accosted by a gang of armed robbers whose sporadic gun shots unfortunately felled Corps Member Bomoi Suleiman Yusuf.”

“It is imperative to state that the 16 other Corps Members were never abducted.”

“The death of any Corps Member is a big loss, not just to his family, but to the Scheme and the entire nation at large.”

“Sadly, it is always the darkest moment in the life of the Scheme.”

“Management wishes to convey its deepest condolences to the family of Late Corps Member Yusuf and prays God to grant them the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

The Director-General wishes to admonish all Corps Members to at all times adhere strictly to the safety guidelines issued to them from time to time, which particularly frowns at night travels.”

“May the soul of Bomoi Suleiman Yusuf rest in peace.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has confirmed receiving intelligence of criminals plotting to attack churches and mosques in the southwest state.

Naija News recalls that the Department of State Service (DSS) had on Tuesday warned that some persons are planning to bomb Nigeria during the Christmas and new year celebrations.

Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday, CP Odumosu said the command had received intelligence from the DSS.

He said the Command and other security agencies were taking steps to ensure no such thing happened anywhere in the state.
