The Nigerian government has been advised to allow every citizen to own weapons so as to defend themselves from banditry attacks.

The suggestion was made during the weekend by Alhaji Attahiru Mohammed Ahmad, the traditional leader of Anka who doubled as the chairman of Zamfara State Council of Chiefs.

The Emir during a condolence visit to the Emir of Kaura-Namoda during the last weekend, noted that banditry attack will not end in the region except residents are authorised to own weapons and fight back, Naija News reports.

Ahmad appealed to the state government to allow people of the state fight back since the bandits are not ready to give in to security operative threats.

“Since the bandits refused to surrender, the government should allow everyone to carry weapons for self-defence,” the Emir said.

He further noted that the peace accord and reconciliation process initiated by Zamfara Governor, Bello Matawalle would not bring end insecurity in the state because the bandits would never relent in their operations.

The Emir added: “One cannot make peace with people who are not ready to embrace peace and reconciliation as initiated by the government.”

He, however, pleaded with the governments to also allow security agencies to counter the bandits in their capacities, noting that security operatives could conquer the situation if given the chance and necessary weapons.

Lamenting on how many traditional rulers have been subjected to a series of attacks by the bandits, Ahamd said: “Last year, the Emir of Potiskum was attacked. Here in Zamfara, Emir of Bukkuyum was also attacked and his orderly was killed in the process and the Emir of Yauri.

“So, the only option is to allow people to defend themselves because the issue is getting out of control and there is no hope in sight.”

In another news, Naija News reported that Adeniyi Ajayi, a notorious armed robber has escaped from police detention in Lagos.

It was gathered that the robber escaped police custody through the help of some senior officers in the command.
