The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC has been asked to extend the deadline on shutting down SIM cards not linked to the National Identity Number, NIN.

The call for the rescheduling was made by the lower chamber of the National Assembly on Wednesday, December 16, Naija News understands.

It was said that the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu today during plenary, raised a motion of urgent public importance to delay the earlier announced move to February 2021.

Naija News learnt that Elumelu in his motion explained that the House agrees with the policy of linking SIM cards to NIN, noting that the new policy is consistent with the position of the House.

He revealed that the lower chamber had made some recommendations to the NCC earlier regarding the policy.

“As laudable as the policy is, Nigerians have not been properly sensitized. In this yuletide season, it could lead to stampede and exploitation,” Elumelu noted.

In opposition to the extension of the registration by 8weeks, Uzoma Abonta stated that 1year would be appropriate for the process.

However, the amendment for a one-year extension was rejected by the House.
