Zamfara State Government on Tuesday shut down 10 boarding schools in the state to prevent possible abduction of students by bandits.
This was disclosed to newsmen by the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ibrahim Abdullahi.
According to the government official, the schools would remain closed until the security improves.
Abdullahi said, “We will not want what happened in Katsina to happen in Zamfara State.
“All the Principals of the affected schools have been directed to ensure immediate closure of the affected schools.”
He listed the affected schools as Government Secondary Schools in Zurmi, GSS Birnin Magaji, (boarding), and G.A.S.S Zurmi (boarding), G.G.S.S Moriki (boarding). Science Secondary School Shinkafi (boarding), Science Secondary School, Dansadau (boarding) and Science Secondary School, Bukkuyum (boarding).
Others are G.D. S. S Nassarawa Mailayi (day), G.D.S.S Gusami (day), and G.D.S.S Gurbin Bore, (day).
He urged parents and guardians to exercise patience and cooperate with the government.
Recall that bandits on Friday night abducted 333 students of the Government Science Secondary School (GSSS), Kankara, Katsina State.
The gunmen reportedly later contacted one of the parents of the abducted students to make their demands.
According to Kadaria Ahmed, media personality, Abdul Labaran, spokesman of the Katsina government, disclosed the demand in a chat with RadioNow FM.
In a post on her Twitter page, Kadaria quoted Labaran as saying the gunmen have asked the parents to start making preparations for ransom to facilitate the release of the students.
He also reportedly said the gunmen also asked the parent to warn the Nigerian military to stop the surveillance of their hideouts to guarantee the safety of the students.
