Buhari Raises Alarm, Says Weapons From Russia-Ukraine War Now Slipping To Africa

Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari has lamented that the major problem of Africa is terrorism and insecurity.

Buhari while speaking at the 14th extra-ordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union on ‘Silencing the Gun’ noted that the continent must achieve peace, security and stability.

He charged African leaders during the virtual meeting to promote the implementation of arms control instruments and embargoes.

According to Buhari, the increase in peace agreements in the continent is an effort towards achieving peace, security and stability.

The Nigeria leader charged African leaders to monitor and evaluate the implementation of arms control instruments and embargoes.

Buhari said intra/inter-state resurgence of conflicts in Africa underscores the imperative for the AU Mediation Support Unit to be strengthened.

“Threats of terrorist activities, other trans-organised crimes and external interference in the internal affairs of African States are increasing.”

“We also see maritime security threats, including the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and the challenges of the porous border are also visible.”

“It is in this regard that we blame the slow implementation of the African Common Defence Policy, hinged on the establishment of the African Standby Force.”

Naija News had earlier reported that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, stated that there is a possibility of more terrorist activities in Nigeria for the next 20 years.

He, however, noted that it only depends on the level of escalation and the appropriate responses by all stakeholders both civil and military authorities.
