Nigeria, China Sign Agreement On Counter-Terrorism

The Nigerian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese Armed Forces Commission on Combating Terrorism Naija News reports.

This follows the signing of a bilateral agreement at the National Security Headquarters in Abuja, following Nigeria’s request for military assistance from China.

The agreement was signed on behalf of the two countries by the Minister of Defense, Major General Bashir Salihi (retd), and the Chinese Deputy Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Zhao Yong.

Magashi said there was no doubt that if Nigeria received military assistance from China it would help it put an end to terrorism in northeastern Nigeria.

The minister said he was pleased to understand that the issue of security and terrorism was a global problem and not just peculiar to Nigeria.

He said there was a need to bring all nations together to fight terrorism.

He urged other neighbouring countries and Nigeria to follow China’s example in providing military assistance to Nigeria, as only through cooperation could the fight against terrorists be achieved in a short period of time.

During the signing ceremony, China was represented by the Acting Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Mr Zhao Yong and Senior Colonel Liu Yongxuan.
