Former President of Niger, Mamadou Tandja is dead.
The development was confirmed by the Niger government, however, the cause of his death was not stated.
Niger government in its statement also declared “three days of mourning throughout the national territory” for the 82-year-old.
Recall that Tandja was forced out of power in February 2010 after plans to remain in power despite a two-term limit.
Mahamadou Issoufou took over from the deceased in 2011.
The former leader had been ill for several years and was flown to France, Germany and Morocco for treatment.
Tandja died at the time Niger is preparing for the December 27 presidential election.
