Amnesty International condemns killing of CAN chairman

At least six persons have been reportedly shot to death following the heavy gunshots targeted at #EndSARS protesters by security operatives at the Lekki Tollgate on Tuesday.

Security operatives, comprising the Nigerian Army and the Police allegedly opened fire on the peaceful protesters, leading to deaths while several others were also wounded.

Several videos that have gone viral on social media platforms, particularly, the micro-blogging site, Twitter also show the attack on the unarmed protesters by security operatives.

Reacting to the sad development, Amnesty International (AI) has condemned the attack on the innocent protesters by the security operatives.

It also added that while it is carrying out further investigation into what transpired at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday night, it already has in its possession credible but disturbing pieces of evidence confirming the excessive use of force by security operatives on the peaceful protesters.

Amnesty International said: “Amnesty International has received credible but disturbing evidence of excessive use of force occasioning deaths of protesters at Lekki toll gate in Lagos. #EndSARS #Lekki #Nigeria.”

“While we continue to investigate the killings, Amnesty International wishes to remind the authorities that under international law, security forces may only resort to the use of lethal force when strictly unavoidable to protect against imminent threat of death or serious injury,” it added.

It will be recalled that the Lagos State government, in the wake of the escalating security situation in the state, declared a 24-hour curfew to arrest the situation.

Security operatives were deployed to enforce compliance with the order.
