For four days and still counting, protesters across Nigeria have continued to clamour for the reform of the policing sector.

With the Hashtag #EndSARS, various groups from Abeokuta to Lagos, Rivers, Oyo etc. have continued to protest the unending police brutality in the country.

The unrest was triggered by the killing of a young man in Delta state and the brutalisation of another person in Lagos had triggered this unrest which made Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police, to dissolve the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) 48 hours after the youth trooped to the streets.

Refusing to back down, the protesters said dissolving of SARS is just one out of the demands that they have and have vowed that they would continue to protest if their demands are not met.

Here are the demands:

  • Immediate release of all arrested protesters
  • Justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensations for their families.
  • Set up an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reported police misconduct within a period of 10 days
  • In-line with the new police act, carry out psychological evaluation and retaining of all disbanded SARS before they can deployed, this should be verified by an independent body.
  • The government should increase police salary and they should adequately compensated for protecting lives and property of the citizens.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), on Tuesday set up a new tactical unit to replace the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
