Court Remands Five Drug Barons In Lagos

An Oyo State High Court has sentenced a former bank worker to ninety-eight years (98) of imprisonment for allegedly converting millions of naira belonging to the bank she worked with to her personal use.

Naija News learnt that Oreoluwa Adesakin, who worked with a first-generation bank, bagged the lengthy years of imprisonment after she was found guilty of stealing money to the tune of N49,320,652.32 from the bank.

Speaking on the development, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media & Publicity of the commission, said Adesakin was prosecuted by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), on a 14-count charge, bordering on stealing, forgery and fraudulent accounting.

Delivering judgement on the convict, Justice Muniru Olagunju said the court found her guilty of financial fraud against her employers to the tune of N49,320,652.32, and additional $368,203 belonging to the same.

One of the charges against Adesakin read: “That you Oreoluwa Adesakin sometime between the months of May, 2013 and November 2013, at Ibadan within the Ibadan Judicial Division, whilst being a staff of a bank stole the sum of N25,974,116.13 from your employer, (name of bank withheld)”.

However, Adesakin in her response pleaded not guilty to all the charges, a decision which necessitated her trial, Naija News understands.

On his part, Usman Murtala, the prosecution counsel, while arguing his case, presented before the judge all vital documents and witnesses which nailed the convict. The judge noted that the EFCC amassed a pool of incontrovertible evidence against Adesakin and did a diligent investigation and prosecution.

Olagunju declared the convict guilty of all the charges presented against her and thereby sentenced her to prison without an option of fine on each of the 14 counts, which will run concurrently. Naija News understands that Adesakin apart from the jail term is also mandated to refund to the Bank, through the EFCC, all the money she stole.

Meanwhile, a High Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau State capital has dismissed the suit by Dr Obadiah Mailafia challenging his invitation by the Nigeria Police Force.
