Investigate Akeredolu Over Ondo COVID-19 Intervention Funds – PDP Tells EFCC

The Peoples Democratic Party National Campaign Council for Ondo Governorship Election has asked Nigeria’s leading anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to immediately commence an investigation into the handling of the Ondo COVID-19 funds by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The opposition party in a thread of tweets on its official microblogging site account on Monday, September 28 noted that Akeredolu should be investigated since he ‘has failed to give a proper account as demanded by the Ondo people.”

PDP described the excuse by embattled Ondo Governor that he submitted the account of the spending of COVID-19 response funds to an Abuja based Non-Governmental Organization as self-indicting.

The party condemned Akeredolu for involving an NGO as a cover-up to escape queries put before him by the people of the state who demand a detailed public account of the COVID-19 intervention funds following allegations of diversions by officials of his self-serving administration.

PDP urged Akeredolu who is contesting for a second term in office under the umbrella of the ruling party, All Progressive Congress to account to the people.

According to PDP, “It is sickening that Governor Akeredolu seeks to confuse the citizens of Ondo state by referring to a bank account he claimed to have sent to an NGO, which provides no proofs of actual item purchases as well as actual delivery of materials and services for payments.”

“We invite Nigerians and the Ondo people to note that Governor Akeredolu’s self-serving administration has failed to account to the people on the management of the fund, having failed to show the term of expenditures, approving details; quantity and quality of products and services paid for; as well as confirmation of actual delivery for payments made,” said PDP.

The tweet reads further, “The response by Governor @RotimiAkeredolu has only muddled up statutory financial accounting system by referring the people of Ondo to an NGO in Abuja.”

“Our campaign, therefore, invites the @officialEFCC to immediately commence an investigation into the handling of the Ondo COVID-19 funds now that Governor @RotimiAkeredolu has failed to give a proper account as demanded by the Ondo people.”

Meanwhile, on Monday, September 28, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, warned that he may be forced to get involved in the governorship election in Ondo State if the All Progressives Congress drag him into their politics.
