The Chinese government has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) to administer its experimental COVID-19 vaccines to citizens.

The development was disclosed on Friday, September 25 by Zheng Zhongwei, a National Health Commission official of the country. According to Zhongwei, they would continue with the process until the conclusion of clinical trials.

Naija News recalls that the Chinese government had launched the emergency programme in July 2020.

Given details on the vaccine, the NHC official during the Friday press briefing disclosed that hundreds of thousands essential workers and others considered at high risk of infection have been administered the vaccine.

He said, “Even though its efficacy and safety had not been fully established as Phase III clinical trials were incomplete, at the end of June, China’s State Council approved a plan of COVID-19 vaccine emergency use programme.

“After the approval, on June 29, we made a communication with the relevant representatives of the WHO Office in China, and obtained support and understanding from WHO,” Zhongwei was quoted saying.

Meanwhile, Nigerian Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire has said that no vaccine would be ready for the treatment of the dreaded COVID-19 virus until 2021.
