Oil tanker explosions are one of the worst accidents in Nigeria, claiming many lives and property.

The surge in the tanker fire tragedy has been of serious concern among Nigerians.

The worst accident of an oil tanker that Nigeria will never forget was on Okobie Road in Rivers State, where 121 people were killed and hundreds seriously injured, in addition to dozens of cars and motorcycles that were set on fire.

The one in Ibadan in November 2000 killed between 100 and 200 people.

 

Here are some of the accidents that took place in two years in Nigeria

On September 6, 2020, five houses and 49 shops were gutted by an oil tanker fire on Lambata Road in Gawu Babangida Local Government Area of ​​Niger State.

The fire broke out after an oil tanker collided with a trailer trying to avoid a large hole. Not a single person was killed because the accident happened on the day the market was not open and people did not show up.

On August 26, 2020, two people where killed when a car carrying 33,000 liters of fuel crashed into the street causing a fire in front of the Gwallamaji Technical College, Bauchi. According to eyewitnesses, the accident took place around 8pm when the fuel burst into flames and caught fire.

On August 14, 2020, at a petrol station in Irete, Imo State, an oil tanker caught fire, killing one person and burning two vehicles.

On July 22, 2020, a lightning strike occurred on the Benin-Sapele-Warri highway when a fuel tanker exploded on a busy road.

The Guardian reports that 20 people lost their lives in the blaze, and at least 10 cars were set on fire.

On October 17, 2019, a mother and her baby were burnt to death when more than 40 buildings collapsed in an oil tanker fire in the Iweka area of ​​Onitsha in Anambra State.

Then more than 500 closed shops were set on fire. The fire broke out after the car was snatched by the driver which resulted in the head of the car being separated from its body and immediately the fuel started leaking, the fire started.

On the night of August 30, 2019, one person was reported dead and 10 others injured after an oil tanker exploded at Dikko on the Abuja-Kaduna road. Then several cars burned down.

On July 2, 2019, at least 50 people were reported dead, 100 injured as a result of a truck bomb.

Reports say the men were killed as they scrambled to fetch fuel from a tanker truck that crashed.

The vehicle crashed when the driver tried to avoid potholes on Ahumbe village road in Benue State.

On April 29, 2019, at least seven people jumped over a well in the back when an oil tanker exploded at the premises of a Bolek Filling Station near the Makurdin University of Benue State.

On April 14, 2019, 12 people were reported dead and 16 others seriously injured in a tanker explosion in Gombe State.

The French news agency Nigeria News reported that the car had been hijacked by a driver as he tried to avoid a collision with a car on a bridge outside the city.

On January 12, 2019, there was a report of a tragic oil tanker accident that claimed more than 60 lives and property on Calabar Road in Cross Rivers State.

On October 4, 2018, a truck loaded with 33,000 liters of fuel crashed on Akure-Owo Road in Ondo, causing a fire that claimed the lives of four people and an infant.

Eyewitnesses at the time of the accident witnessed the burning of cars, houses and shops near this street.

On October 1, 2018, an overnight fuel tank explosion caused the loss of millions of naira and the burning of 10 vehicles.

The accident took place on Lages-Badagry Road, but no casualties were reported.

On September 10, 2018, at least 35 people were killed and hundreds injured when a gas tanker exploded in Nasarawa State, northern Nigeria.

Reports say the explosion occurred while trying to unload gas at a petrol station on Lafia-Makurdi Road.
