The federal government of Nigeria has admonished religious leaders in the country to educate their respective congregations on the need for every individual to wear their facemasks as a means of curbing the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

The statement was issued on Monday, September 21, during the Presidential Task-Force media briefing on COVID-19 in Abuja, headed by Boss Mustapha, Naija News understands.

Registering his displeasure over non challant attitude of Nigerians towards the novel virus, Mustapha said that religious leaders and traditional rulers have a role to play in other to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

According to him, the best Nigerians can do is to adhere to the non-pharmaceutical interventions which include wearing a face mask, observing social distancing and staying away from a large crowd.

He said, “It is sad when people gather and they do not think it is appropriate to wear mask. What we can do is to continue to appeal to our people that COVID-19 is still alive, it has not gone on any vacation.”

“People are dying on a daily basis from COVID-19 and as we expect vaccines to show up on the horizon, the only vaccine we have in our hand now let us apply it,” Mustapha added.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Monday, September 21 confirmed one hundred and ninety-five cases of Coronavirus in Nigeria.
