1. Edo 2020: INEC Officially Declares Godwin Obaseki Winner

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Governor Godwin Obaseki the winner of the Edo governorship election.

Obaseki polled 307,955 votes to defeat the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who polled 223,619.

He won in 13 Local Government Areas while Ize-Iyamu secured victory in only 5 LGAS out of the 18 in the state.

Out of 550,242 total votes cast across the state, Obaseki scored 307,955 while Ize-Iyamu scored 223,619 votes.

2. COVID-19: FG Begins Assessment of Schools For Reopening

The Muhammadu Buhari-led government has begun a nationwide meeting to review laid down guidelines and protocols for the reopenings of schools.

This was made known by the State Minister for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Speaking during a meeting of the North West School Protocols Guidelines Stakeholders’, the minister disclosed that he was in Kano to assess the readiness of the schools vis-a-vis the full maintenance of COVID-19 protocols before going ahead to actualize the dreams of full reopening.

He commended the Kano State Government for its laudable initiatives in promoting education, which he described as worthy of emulation by other States.

Speaking earlier, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje praised the progress recorded and measures taken by the Buhari administration in reopening of schools in the country.

Ganduje represented by his Deputy, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna thanked Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba for paying him a visit at his office.

3. Saraki Commends Buhari Over Edo Governorship Election

Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has commended the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari for the role he played in the outcome of the 2020 Edo State governorship election.

Saraki noted on his Twitter page on Sunday that the leadership provided by the President ensured a level playing ground in Saturday’s election.

He added that he believes Buhari’s instruction on the conduct of credible polls guaranteed that Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State wasn’t declared inconclusive.

4. ‘Triumph Over Godfatherism’ – Obaseki Releases Statement After Winning Edo Governorship Election

Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State has described his victory in the 2020 governorship election in the state as a victory over godfatherism.

Obaseki made the statement on Sunday after he was declared the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh declared Obaseki winner of the election.

Speaking after his electoral victory, the Governor while commending the people of Edo State, described his re-election as “triumph over godfatherism”.

He said, “Words fail me in saluting our teeming supporters who displayed immense courage in the face of threats, intimidation, and brutalization.

“The collective will of Edo people made it possible for us this triumph over godfatherism. Congratulations to Edo people.”

5. APC Rejects Outcome Of Edo Governorship Election, Reveals Next Step

The All Progressives Party (APC) in Edo State has alleged foul play in the September 19th Governorship election, but called on party members to stay calm while party leaders study the result and decide what is next.

In a release by the Chairman of the APC Media Campaign Council, Mr. John Mayaki, the party rejected the result, citing alleged strong arm tactics.

“Our people were arbitrarily arrested, many of the figures were fabricated,” said the terse statement, which the party said was only a preliminary reaction.

It further alleged illicit tampering with results, to shore up PDP numbers and markdown APC’s.

“Areas where we won, they cancelled them. They decreased the votes in areas we had advantage,” the party further claimed. “They rejected our results and jerked up theirs.”

Meanwhile, the party also claimed there was arbitrary arrest of local party members, who could have resisted the outrage, while Governor Godwin Obaseki was busy diverting attention with false alarm.

“Obaseki shouted that he was being rigged out and blamed INEC at the initial stage but that was to divert attention from the evil going on in the field”, the statement said.

The party, however, told its members to stay calm, thanking them for their support, and adding that party leaders were studying the result and would announce their decision and course of action as soon as possible.

6. Emir Of Zaria, Shehu Idris Is Dead

Emir of Zaria, Alhaji Shehu Idris is dead.

The development was confirmed on Sunday by the former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, Shehu Sani.

Sani on his Twitter account expressed shock at the passing of Emir Idris, he described him as a titan of peace and bridge between religion.

His tweet read: “I received the shocking news of the demise of our Emir of Zaria HRH Alhaji Shehu Idris. We lost a unifying figure,a Titan of peace and an exemplar for tolerance.”

“He was a pillar of transformation and a Bridge between religion, culture and modernity. Inna lillahi wainna Illayhir rajiun.”

7. APC’s Ize-Iyamu Reacts After Losing Edo Governorship Election

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 19 governorship election in Edo State has reacted to the outcome of the polls.

Ise-Iyamu who spoke via his Twitter account on Sunday, said he was studying the results of the election along with other party members, adding that his next move will be announced soon.

The APC candidate also used the opportunity to appreciate his supporters, some of whom he alleged were prevented from voting during the election.

He tweeted: “I thank and appreciate my supporters, who had to endure many evils including being prevented from voting, for their support and determination during the election. I assure you all that I am studying the results along with other party members and will announce my next move soon.”

8. Obaseki’s Victory Means We Can Win In Lagos In 2023 – PDP

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has noted that the re-election of the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has further strengthened it’s determination to take over Lagos State in 2023.

The party on Sunday said if the embattled Obaseki could surmount all the challenges to win, the party also could.

The spokesperson of the party, Taofik Gani, stated this in a congratulatory message to Obaseki.

Gani said the party’s state chapter particularly, hailed the governor for his ability to garner the needed votes to be declared at first ballot.

He further stated that he is optimistic that the party would also ensure it emerged victorious in the Lagos State governorship election in 2023.

9. President Buhari Congratulates Obaseki Over Victory, Tells Him What To Do

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has congratulated Governor Godwin Obaseki, as the winner of the Edo State 2020 governorship election.

The president in a tweet on Sunday, September 20, by his Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, urged Obaseki to show grace and humility in victory.

Naija News understands that Buhari’s congratulatory message to Obaseki came after the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared the incumbent governor of Edo and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the winner of the 2020 governorship polls, defeating Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressive Congratulations, APC, and others.
