Police Arrest Vigilante Chairman Over Unlawful Possession Of Firearms In Delta

The Vigilante Chairman of Beneku Unit, Chukwuji Gabriel has been apprehended by the Delta State Police Command over unlawful possession of firearms.

According to a police report, one cut-to-size locally-made pistol, three single barrel guns, double barrel gun and one pump action gun were all discovered at Gabriel’s apartment in the Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state.

Naija News learnt that some of the weapons were found inside the ceiling of the Vigilante Chairman’s residence.

It was reported that Gabriel was arrested following a tip-off that he had in his possession firearms suspected to have been unlawfully possessed. As part of its effort to mop up illegal firearms in Delta State, men of the Police Force in Ashaka Divisional Headquarters went after the suspect and arrested him.

Further reports revealed that two other members of the vigilante group have fled with two double-barrel guns.

The chairman of the vigilante group upon his arrest, during interrogation, admitted to possessing three single barrel guns in his residence.

On his part, when contacted on the report, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Hafiz Inuwa confirmed the arrest of the suspect in a text message sent to reporters.

“Investigation is ongoing,” Inuwa noted in his text.

Meanwhile, about two weeks ago, Naija News reports that some armed bandits have killed about 17 men of the local vigilante in Dukku town of Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State.
