Just a few days to the Edo State governorship elections, the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has said he is interested in ensuring the safety of lives of members of the National Youth Service Corps that would be participating in the polls.

The monarch, on Thursday, September 10 when hosted the Director-General, NYSC, Brig-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, demanded the protection of the serving corps during the September 19 voting exercise as many of them would be used as ad-hoc staffs for the poll.

Ewurare II promised to join forces with NYSC, to ensure full protection of Corps members who will be participating in the election.

He said, “There is a need for the Corps members to be protected because of the desperate attitude of some politicians.”

The monarch added, “Desperate aspiration of politicians is not worth the blood of any corps member; they must be protected from any attack,”

Reacting to the Oba’s demand, Ibrahim said that the Corps members are not partisan, but only discharging their patriotic duties to their fatherland.

He also confirmed the NYSC was closely working with the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, ahead of the nation-wide reopening of orientation camps, in order to ensure a pandemic-free exercise.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, has noted that governorship candidates participating in the September 19 election in Edo State will sign a Peace accord on Tuesday.
