Nigerians Blow Hot As Disco Hike Electricity Tariff

Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 approved an increase in electricity tariff.

This is coming three months after the National Assembly tried to stopped the implementation increase of the tariff which was scheduled to take place in July 1, after the National Assembly prevailed on the distribution companies.

A NERC document on Tuesday showed that electricity customers, except those receiving less than 12 hours of supply, would have to pay more for electricity starting from September 1, 2020.

The development, however, did not go down well with Nigerians who feels this should not be coming at a time the nation’s economy has been affected due to the outbreak of Coronavirus.

Increasing power by 53% is unacceptable. The Nigeria people are overburden with high cost of fuel, increased VAT, strict implementation of Stamp Duty Act, loss of source of livelihood amongst other COVID19 induced cost.

Imagine, I build my own house, buy electric poles and overhead wires, call DISCO staff to install & pay them to hook up my house to national grid. Thereafter the electric poles, wires and even prepaid that I paid for belong to FGN. THIS IS NIGERIA. @NERCNG

@enugudisco is the worst disco in Nigeria in terms of service delivery. Earlier last year, they attempted to force certain users to pay for new prepaid meters, it took the intervention of several Igbo groups and @NERCNG before they rescinded that devilish decision.
