“We Hope Something Is Different Now” – Sam Adeyemi Talks On Mali Coup

Pastor Sam Adeyemi, senior pastor of the Daystar Christian Center in Lagos, Nigeria has added his voice to the reactions trailing the military coup in Mali.

It will be recalled some soldiers supporting the opposition in the West African nation of Mali, executed a successful coup on Tuesday afternoon.

The soldiers arrested Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and his Prime Minister, Boubou Cissé, late Tuesday afternoon in Bamako the nation’s capital.

They later forced the president to resign and dissolve the country’s parliament.

Early on Wednesday President Keita announced that he is resigning from his post saying that he does not wish blood to be shed following a military mutiny that plunged the country into a political crisis.

“Today, certain parts of the military have decided that intervention was necessary. Do I really have a choice? Because I do not wish blood to be shed,” Keita said in a brief statement broadcast on national television.

The Malian President said he has decided “to give up my duty from now on.”

Reacting to the development, Pastor Adeyemi lamented that most African countries have not developed with either military or civilian governments but have been recycling leaders.

He hoped things will be different following the recent political happenings in Mali.

“Most African countries have not developed with either military or civilian governments. We rotate members of same political class lacking ability to sell a vision of development, shift culture, and inspire execution. Mali was here 8 years ago. We hope something is different now,” the clergy wrote on Wednesday.

Naija News also earlier reported that Malian soldiers that masterminded the removal of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita from office on Tuesday have explained the reasons behind their action.

According to Col. Ismael Wague, spokesman for the mutineers who spoke in a broadcast after the coup, they needed to intervene before the country sinks deeper into chaos, anarchy, and insecurity.

The soldiers have also ordered the closure of all air and land borders, and imposed a 9 p.m.-5 a.m curfew.
