The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, on Wednesday reacted to the development in Mali which led to the resignation of President Ibrahim Keita.

Recall that the Malian military on Tuesday arrested the President and the Prime Minister after several months of protests by Malians over his government.

Few hours after the incident, the President of Mali dissolved his cabinet and announced his resignation.

He had said, “I want no blood to be spilled to keep me in power,” BBC quoted him as saying.

Onyema in a post on Twitter condemn the coup that led to the removal of Keita.

The minister, however, called for an immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.

He said, “The Nigerian Government unequivocally condemns the coup d’état that took place in #Mali yesterday and demands the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order.”

“We welcome the urgent activation of the #ECOWAS Standby force.”
