Strike: ASUU To Return To The Negotiating Table With The Federal Government

Strong indications emerged over the weekend that the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU would return to the negotiating table to end the four-month teachers’ strike.

A media inquiry by This Day newspaper found that the two sides would soon begin talks to resolve their differences.

The two sides will return to the negotiating table to renew talks on their differences, especially over the government’s new Integrated Payroll and Personnel and Information System (IPPIS)

The rejection of the new system has led the government to decide to suspend the payment of salaries to all ASUU members who refuse to join the scheme.

ASUU, on the other hand, is adamant that the payment of salaries to university staff is different from the one established by the federal government, which has caused divisions among them.

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, ASUU President Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said the union had met with the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to assist in returning to the negotiating table with the federal government.

The Minister of Labor, Dr. Chris Ngige, also confirmed that he had invited the ASUU to return to the negotiating table where further discussions would take place to reach an agreement.

Professor Ogunyemi said ASUU was ready to return to the negotiating table but had not received an invitation yet. Responding to a question on whether the union would call off the strike to allow the universities to reopen, Ogunyemi said: “We believe if the federal government is honest, our members will return to work as soon as we resolve it. the differences between us.”
