The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday launched a portal where election results from polling units can be viewed by the public.
The development was revealed in a statement released by the Commission’s National Commissioner and Information and Voter Education Committee Chairman, Festus Okoye, who noted that the portal will “strengthen the transparency in the election result management system.”
According to him, the commission will commence usage of the Portal with the Nasarawa central state constituency election after which it will also be deployed in Edo and Ondo governorship polls.
Okoye, however, on Sunday during a TV programme, failed to answer question about the platform hosting the webpage. When asked if the page for checking the results was hosted on INEC’s official website, he responded by saying that he is not ICT oriented and has less knowledge about the portal.
The INEC commissioner was also asked if the portal will be launch on the INEC website, he further stated that he will have to ask an get back to the moderator of the programme.
This is coming years after the commandant of the Lagos State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Shem Obafaiye, could not correctly state the website of NSCDC. Obafaiye had stated that he needs to ask ‘his Oga At The Top’ for the details of NSCDC’s website.
Okoye was also asked to reveal details of INEC’s budget towards the forthcoming election in Edo and Ondo State, unfortunately, he couldn’t answer noting that he has less information about the details and will have to ask.
The moderator of the programme at the end of the interview noted that the portal can be checked on ‘Inecelectionresult.com’
