1. Federal Government Extends COVID-19 Lockdown

President Muhammadu Buhari led administration has announced an extension of the second phase of the eased lockdown for another four weeks. The extension is the third for the second phase.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha announced this on Thursday during the Task Force briefing in Abuja.

He explained that the extension is necessary to address identified challenges and improving the national response to eventually win the fight against the pandemic.

2. INEC Launches Portal For Monitoring Result’s Live Transmission From Polling Units

A portal where election results from polling units can be viewed in real-time has been launched by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

A statement released on Thursday by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye noted that the portal will “strengthen the transparency in the election result management system.”

According to him, the Commission will commence usage of the Portal with the Nasarawa central constituency election after which it will also be deployed in Edo and Ondo governorship polls.

Okoye, explained that the measure does not constitute electronic collation of results.

3. Insecurity: Buhari Gives New Directives To Service Chiefs, Security Heads

In a bid to address security challenges in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed heads of security and defence services to implement comprehensive security philosophies.

The president gave the directive on Thursday, August 6 while speaking at the graduation of the National Defence College Course 28 in the Federal Capital Territory today.

President Buhari who was represented by the Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen Bashir Magashi (rtd.) noted that in spite of challenges including insecurity, unemployment, COVID-19 pandemic, the country has remained strong and vibrant in all forms.

He again assured Nigerians of his commitment towards taking the country to the Next Level.

4. 12 Lawmakers Sworn In As Victor Edoror Emerges Speaker Of Edo House Of Assembly

Some members of the Edo State House of Assembly on Thursday elected Victor Edoror as the Speaker of the Assembly.

Recall that security operatives were spotted at the entrance of the State’s House of Assembly as members convened for another plenary.

Following this development, not less than 17 members of the house, in an undisclosed location in the state held the house session.

Edoror’s appointment as Speaker is coming months after Frank Okiye was inaugurated as the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly by Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki.

5. UK Advises Citizens To Avoid These Nigerian States (Full List)

The Government of the United Kingdom (UK) has advised its citizens against travelling to some states in Nigeria.

The travel advisory which was updated on Thursday on its website by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advised British nationals against all but essential international travel.

Naija News reports that the UK warned it’s citizens against visiting Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe States, as well as riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

The UK also advised its citizens against travelling within 20km of the border with Niger in Zamfara State.

6. Lockdown Extension: FG Gives New Directive To Banks, Schools

President Muhammadu Buhari’s led administration said it has granted all commercial banks in the country permission to operate fully.

According to the federal government in a statement on Thursday, August 6, banks can now open all their branches.

Speaking during a media briefing, Dr. Sani Aliyu, the National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, noted that President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval.

7. Travellers To Arrive Three Hours Before International Flights

The aviation authorities and airline operators have been directed by the Presidential Taskforce Force on COVID-19 to begin the process for the restart of international flights.

Travellers are expecting the Federal Government to announce the reopening of international flights following the reopening of domestic airports for domestic flights in July after over four months of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The National Coordinator of PTF, Sani Aliyu, during the daily briefing on Thursday in Abuja, called on the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and other agencies, as well as airlines, should commence the process for the restart of international flights.

8. Femi Adesina And RevolutionNow Lawyer Exchange Heated Words On Tv

President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesperson, Femi Adesina, and the National President of Revolutionary Lawyers Forum, Tope Akinyode, on Thursday exchange words on a monitored TV programme over the #RevolutionNow protests that took place in various parts of the country on Wednesday.

Akinyode while speaking noted that the aim of the protesters was to call for good governance, poverty eradication, a stop to the insecurity and many other issues.

Adesina in his response described the protests as an irritation and a child’s play.

9. Al-Qaeda: Shehu Sani Begs US To Help Nigeria

Shehu Sani, a former Senator who represented Kaduna Central has appealed to the United State of America to provide aid to the Nigerian government in its fight against terrorism.

The former lawmaker made the appeal in his reaction to the alert by the US government of a planned invasion by the deadly terrorist group, Al-Qaeda, through the North-Western region of the country.

As earlier reported by Naija News on Wednesday, America during a press briefing by the Commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, Africa, Dagvin Anderson disclosed that it has notified the Nigerian government that the terrorists were planning an expansion into the country.

10. Nigerian Police Force Arrest Naira Marley

Nigerian hip-hop star, Azeez Fashola, known as Naira Marley has been picked up by the Lagos State Police Command.

Naija News learnt that he was picked up and detained on Thursday, 6th of August because he contravened COVID-19 safety guidelines set by the Federal Government earlier this year.

The musician had been in the news in June for travelling to Abuja from Lagos with a private charter flight during COVID-19 lockdown to perform at a concert.

The concert which held at the Jabi Lake Mall on Saturday, June 13th, was in contravention of the COVID-19 Presidential Task Force directive on social gatherings.
