Prominent Nigerians have reacted to the clampdown of peaceful protesters by security operatives in Abuja, the federal capital.

Recall that the convener of the RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, on Tuesday announced the Nigerians would match against corruption, killing and increase in the poverty rate in the country.

The protesters under the aegis of the RevolutionNow movement had converged at the Unity Fountain in Abuja to protest against the continued killings in some parts of the country.

Information gathered revealed that the protesters were rounded up by armed security agencies, purportedly action on orders from above and subjected them to inhumane treatment.

Amnesty International while reacting to the development, noted that embarking on a peaceful protest is the right of every human.

“Protest is a human right,” the group tweeted four times.

Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, in her reaction also described the action of the security operatives as shameful.

“Very shameless security agents. Where is Shekau? He has dared them again and again and yet no arrest. It is innocent citizens they harass. If one million citizens were on the streets how many will they arrest?”

“The most populous country in Africa until it comes to protests,” she said

Omoyele Sowore also condemned the arrest and treatment of the protesters, he said, “Nigerian security agents subjecting peaceful #RevolutionNow protesters to inhuman and degrading treatment at Unity Fountain in Abuja.”
