A family in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State has blamed their inability to go to school as the reason why they got cheated by the Nigerian Policemen, leading to the death of their family member.

The family lamented after their family member whose name is revealed as Kehinde Omotosho, reportedly gave up the ghost while in police detention over a crime committed by one of his sons.

Naija News learnt that Omotosho who is a tradesman based in the Oyo capital landed in police custody after the security men stormed his apartment to arrest one of his children, Kabiru. Reports, however, had it that the policemen arrested the father and his younger son, Jelili, after the culprit was nowhere to be found.

Mr Omotosho, however, died after spending seven days in the detention at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan. Reports had it that the deceased was denied access to meet with his relatives until his death on Wednesday, July 22.

According to Akin Fadeyi, Director of the Akin Fadeyi Foundation, the deceased who happens to be the breadwinner of his family, left behind an aged mother.

He said, “We just received another sad report through FlagIt App. Mr. Kehinde Omotosho, alias Akéde, a trader at Gbagi Market, Ibadan, Oyo State, was in his house on Wednesday. Nigerian police officers from Iyaganku came to his house to effect the arrest of his son, Kabiru. He was said to have been involved in a fight.

“The son was not at home. The police allegedly arrested the father in lieu of the son. This is called hostage arrest. They drove him to State CID, Iyaganku. They also took with him Kabiru’s brother, called Jelili. Mr Omotosho was kept for seven days. He was not charged to court and neither were his relatives allowed to see him. Between yesterday night and today, Mr Kehinde Omotosho died in a police cell.”

He added, “The family Representative of the Late Mr Omotosho while speaking with me said these words, ‘The Nigerian Police has killed our family member. We are only cheated because we are not educated and because we don’t know anybody’”.

Mr Fadeyi urge the police force to get set for a challenge, boasted that the matter would not be swept under the rug.

“Nigerian Police authorities are being put on notice that this matter shall not be swept under the carpet. We shall demand justice for the bereaved and his family,” said Fadeyi.

On his part when contacted by newsmen, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Gbenga Fadeyi, he is yet to be briefed of the incident.

“I just heard about this now but I will find out and get back to you later in the day,” he said.
