Senate Under My Watch Was Not A Rubber Stamp - Lawan

Senate President Ahmed Lawan is reportedly plotting to contest the 2023 Presidential Election on the platform of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

A top source in the APC told SaharaReporters that Lawan had nominated Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State as Chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Committee of the party because of his presidential ambition.

It was gathered that should the APC decide to make the contest for its ticket open to every zone in Nigeria, Mai Mala Buni’s nomination would place Lawan in a strong position.

The APC source said: “Lawan is making moves for presidency in 2023 and this may be his first ambition in that direction.

“He is a proponent of North-East producing the next President and that is his agenda if the zoning favours the region.

“Though there are divergent views in the party as many are pushing for it to be zoned to the South.”

Media Adviser to the Senate President, Ola Awoniyi, said talks of his principal eyeing the President’s position in 2023 was mere speculation when contacted by SaharaReporters.

Naija News reports that former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, is eyeing the position of National Chairman of the party.

Should Senator Sheriff emerge the party chairman, that may end the ambition of Lawan as both men are from Borno State, North-east Nigeria.
