Okada Riders Banned From Plying Ogun Highways

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun has expressed his displeasure with the operation of commercial motorcycle riders, better known as ‘Okada’ riders plying highways in the state.

The governor in a statement on Wednesday, July 15 gave a restriction order that stops the Okada riders from playing highways in the state.

According to Abiodun, while inaugurating the Ogun State Transport Master Plan Committee in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta yesterday, the motorcycle riders must be stopped from operating on the highways as their operation poses an inherent danger, not only to them but also to their passengers.

The governor insisted that the highways are not meant for the okada operation, noting that they were meant to operate only serve as a means of moving people from the interior parts of the state to the major roads.

He described as a suicidal mission to both the riders and their passengers plying the expressways, most especially the Lagos-Ibadan road.

“They (okada riders) were not meant to ply the major roads. Worse still, they were not meant to ply highways. Today, you see okada on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. I think that must stop,” he said.

“in the meantime, you need to come up with a decision on Okadas and how to stop them from plying the highways. We must not see Okadas on Lagos-Ibadan expressway because this is completely unacceptable. That road was not built for Okadas,” said the governor while addressing members of the Committee led by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr Gbenga Dairo.

He, however, noted that his intentions is not to deprive the motorcycle riders their source of income but “we want to ensure that things are better organised,” Governor Abiodun reiterated.

Meanwhile, Naija News reported earlier that hours after founder and Chief Executive Officer of Gokada, Fahim Saleh was reported dead, a fresh finding revealed he was been followed by a masked man before his body was later found.
