Magu Suspended, WAEC Cancelled, Hushpuppi Hires International Lawyer, Other Major Happenings In Nigeria Last Week

Events last week started on a high note when the news filtered in that the head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC had been arrested over alleged involvement in corruption. Midweek, the minister of education Adamu Adamu announced the suspension of the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), a pronouncement that has been welcomed with mixed reactions. Naija News brings you a round-up of the major events and happenings in Nigeria last week.

Magu Arrested, Detained By Presidential Panel

On Monday, the panel investigating the activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested and detained the Acting Chairman of the Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

The embattled EFCC Chairman was stopped in traffic while moving out of the Wuse II Annex of the EFCC in Abuja and was immediately whished to the presidential villa where he stilled been detained and undergoing interrogation.

By Tuesday Mohammed Umar, EFCC Director of Operations was temporarily picked to oversee the agency’s affair in the absence of suspended boss, Ibrahim Magu.

On Wednesday,  Bala Ciroma was appointed by President Muhammadu  Buhari to replace Magu as the new Acting Chairman of EFCC.

Until his appointment, Mr Ciroma was the Commissioner of Police of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Alleged internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Ray Hushpuppi, had hired Gal Pissetzky, a top criminal attorney in Chicago, United StatesMr Pissetzky swiftly granted an interview with Forbes, claiming that his client is “Absolutely not guilty of (the) charges they are accusing him of,” adding, ” that Hushpuppi was running a legitimate business and a very legitimate Instagram account and did not take part in any scam or fraud.”

The Top Chicago lawyer went further to claim that his client was Kidnapped from Dubai by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. According to him the “FBI and the government here acted illegally when they kidnapped him from Dubai without any legal process to do so.”

Federal Government Suspends 2020 WASSCE

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, on Wednesday announced that Nigerian students will not write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE 2020).

The Education Minister said he would prefer Nigerian students to lose an academic year to expose them to dangers as Coronavirus continues to spread in Nigeria.

A day after some stakeholders in the education sector expressed their support for the Federal Government’s decision not to allow students to sit for the WASSCE 2020 amid Coronavirus in Nigeria.

Some Nigerians including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against cancelling the forthcoming WASSCE.

On Thursday, the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio was summoned by the Senate Committee investigating the case of alleged misappropriation of funds in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Akpabio, denied accusations that he collected N500 million from the NDDC and never executed the project it was meant for.

He stated that the decision of the Senate to investigate the allegation is an attack on the Interim Management Committee (IMC) set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to manage NDDC’s affairs.

Nigerian Air Force Commence 2020 Recruitment

Finally, On Saturday, the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, has announced that’s it would commence its 2020 Trades/Non-Trades Men and Women recruitment exercise on the 24th of July and it will end on August 21. Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, said the recruitment exercise is free and being organised is a transparent manner.
