Barely 24 hours after Mr Basil Onyeacholam, was declared the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly, he urged the federal government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to address insecurity in its region to avoid further action from residents.

The leader of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, in a statement made available to newsmen a few moments ago, warned that the Igbo people may take decisions in handling the issues of insecurity in its region should the government failed to act accordingly.

Onyeacholam while lamenting over the continuous attack from herdsmen in the Southeast, said that Igbo may resort to self-help in handling insecurity in their territory.

According to the leader, he had come to restructure Ohanaeze Ndigbo, adding that one of his mission includes seeing that an Igbo man emerged Nigeria president come 2023.

Onyeacholam urged President Buhari’s administration to address agitations of the Ndigbo, give them a sense of belonging to promote oneness.

He said, “We want the Federal Government of Nigeria to equitably address the genuine agitations of our people. The President must sit up to the current security challenges in Igboland, to dissuade our people from inevitable self-help.”

“I make bold to say that come 2023, an Igbo man will be elected as the President of Nigeria. The unity of Ndigbo is paramount and sacrosanct in actualising Igbo presidency in 2023.”

“We need peace and security in Igboland and Nigeria at large; we need development, empowerment of Ndigbo in strategic government positions; we need equitable distribution of national resources and national development projects in Igboland.”
