As we countdown to the September 19 Edo State Governorship election, Naija News brings you the latest update before the D-Day.

Many political parties will be participating in the election but all attention would be on the candidates of the two major parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Edo Governorship election would serve as a litmus test for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the controversies that trailed the 2019 general election.

Below is a roundup of top stories on the Edo Governorship election

BREAKING: PDP Names Edo Gov’ship Electoral/Appeal Committee (Full List)

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) has released names of individuals that would serve in its Edo State Governorship Electoral Committee.

The party disclosed this in a post on its official Twitter page on Tuesday night.

The PDP also inaugurated its Appeal Panel to treat all disputes that may arise from the Edo Primaries.

Naija News reports that the Edo Guber primary is scheduled to hold on Thursday, June 25, 2020.

While the Appeal Panel would sit on June 27 at the NEC Hall of the party National Secretariat.

Edo 2020: PDP Drags Judge To CJN Tanko, Demands Sanction

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has filed a petition against Justice Emmanuel Obile of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, for stopping Governor Godwin Obaseki from participating in the party’s primary election.

Naija News had reported earlier that an aspirant in the Edo PDP Primary election, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihiama, instituted the suit, asking the court to stop Obaseki from participating in the election.

Obaseki who recently joined the main opposition party, after he was disqualified by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Screening Committee, was screened last week by the PDP Screening Committee.

However, an order of interim injunction sighted by Naija News shows that the restrained defendants in the suit include; National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, Emmanuel Ogidi, Kingsley Chinda, Debekeme Boyleyefa, James Manager, Ajibola Muraina, the PDP, Obaseki himself, INEC and the INEC Commissioner.

But in a petition dated June 23, addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad and signed by Dakzel Longii Shamnas, the PDP asked the CJN to immediately disciplineJustice E. A Obile for allegedly “taking sides” in the party’s political conflict with a view to disrupting the political process.

Wike Slams PDP Leadership, Describe Them As ‘Tax Collectors’

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has lambasted some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike, while speaking in Port Harcourt the State capital, described some of them as tax collectors.

Naija News recalls that a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt had stopped the PDP from conducting its governorship primaries in Edo State, southern Nigeria ahead of the Edo 2020 election scheduled for September.

The Edo PDP Primary election was slated for Thursday, June 25 before the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court took the decision to halt the primaries.

The same court had also restrained Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State from participating in the PDP governorship primary election.

Reacting, the River State governor accused the PDP NWC of being sycophants who would never tell the truth.

Wike said: “I told them that in Edo State, we must handle the issue carefully and carry everybody along. They must respect human beings and not behave like tax collectors.

“They said because an order was obtained from a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, then I am responsible.

“I have had sleepless nights to resolve the issue in Edo state. The Governors of Edo, Adamawa, and Delta states, know what I have done to resolve the issues in Edo state.”
