COVID-19: Cases Will Rise, May Overwhelm Health Facilities – FG Warns Nigerians
The government noted that Nigeria is yet to reach its peak on COVID-19 cases in the country and yet residents have quickly shunned guidelines due to the lockdown lifting. Adding that citizens are supposed to take personal responsibilities to curb the continuous spread of the dreadful disease.
The Federal Government has expressed its concern over carelessness from citizens following the relaxation/lifting of lockdown in various states in the country.
The government noted that Nigeria is yet to reach its peak on COVID-19 cases in the country and yet residents have quickly shunned guidelines due to the lockdown lifting. Adding that citizens are supposed to take personal responsibilities to curb the continuous spread of the dreadful disease.
During the COVID-19 press briefing in Abuja on Monday, June 15, Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, hints that Coronavirus cases in the country will rise and at a time overwhelm the health infrastructures.
According to him, the government is no longer a frontline in the fight against the virus, and parts played by citizens will also determine whether the country will reach its peak or not.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF said, “If you listen to me conscientiously in the past four weeks, I’ve spoken about personal responsibility.”
“We’re not your frontliners any more. The choice of whether you’ll get to the hospital is yours.”
He added, “Nobody should be deceived that Nigeria has reached the peak of the pandemic.”
Mustapha further warned Nigerians not to misuse the lockdown lifting and allow a wild spread of the killer virus.
He said, “COVID -19 is real and because restrictions have been lifted is not a licence for carelessness. Yes, we’ll return to a new normal, but not the normal of the past.”
“Are figures going to rise? Yes, they’re. The quantum in which they rise is dependent on what we do. But as for the figures, we don’t want to delude anybody; they’ll rise. The quantum with which they’ll rise exponentially or gradually is dependent on what Nigerians do.”
“If we’re not careful, it can overwhelm even our health infrastructure,” the SGF reiterated.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday evening confirmed 573 new cases of coronavirus infection in Nigeria.
With the latest figures, Nigeria now has 16,658 confirmed COVID-19 cases including 5,349 discharged cases and 424 deaths.
