German club, Mainz has given an update on the health condition of striker Taiwo Awoniyi who suffered a head injury during the club’s 1-0 loss at home to Augsburg on Sunday.
Naija News earlier reported that Awoniyi lost consciousness and was motionless for a few seconds after a clash and heavy fall against Augsburg player, Felix Uduokhai during Sunday’s game.
He was later stretchered off and taken to the hospital for treatment.
However, giving an update on the incident, Mainz coach, Achim Beierlorzer said the player is now conscious and responding to treatment.
“Taiwo is conscious and responsive,” Beierlorzer said during his post-match interview. “He has suffered a severe concussion but can remember everything.
“Uduokhai is also spending the night in the hospital as a precautionary measure.”
Mainz lost the game courtesy of a loan strike from Florian Niederlechner and currently sit 15th with 31 points from 31 games in the Bundesliga table, two points above the relegation zone after Sunday’s game.
Awoniyi joined Mainz on a one-year loan deal from Premier League club Liverpool at the start of the season. He has one goal from appearances for the Bundesliga club.
