Barely a week after a video of a woman scolding her two-year-old child who was repeatedly raped surfaced online, reports have emerged that the mother of two is now receiving attention at a rehabilitation centre in Lagos State.
According to the report, the mother who labelled her toddler as ‘Ashawo’, meaning ‘a prostitute’ in the Yoruba language has been taken away from her home while her children also seized by the state government in order to give them proper care.
Naija News had reported that the Executive Secretary of the National Human Right Commission, NHRC, Mr Tony Ojukwu, has reported a sexual assault carried out on a toddler in Lagos State.
Mr Tony on Sunday, June 7 reported that a single mother in Idumota, a popular area in Lagos State beat-up her two-year-old child, blaming her for been sexually violated by an adult in the neighbourhood.
However, reports on Monday morning revealed that the rape victim and her brother have been retrieved from their mother following her reaction to the assault on the girl child.
The woman who caught a man raping her child has now been sent to a rehabilitation centre for mentally challenged people by the state government on Friday morning.
Naija News learnt that the rescue operation was carried out by officials of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development in Lagos State after the video went viral on social media.
Speaking about the rescue mission, the Permanent Secretary of the organization, Yewande Falugba said it became a necessity for the ministry to act in that direction after understanding the matter which demands an emergency response.
Yewande, however, revealed that the rescue became successful through a combined effort of the Child Protection Unit of Ministry, Police Officers and a news correspondent who initially challenged the confused mother at Idumota.
She further revealed that the two children believed to have been violated, have all been taken for medical examination and treatment.
Yewande added that they are currently placed in one of the state government-approved orphanages for adequate treatment until investigations are completed as regards the matter.
