Northern State Governors have been advised by the National Human Rights Commission on Friday not to only relocate Almajiri to their states of origin but to also provide programmes that will attend to their needs.

The Director of NHRC, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Lambert Oparah, made this call in an advisory opinion.

Oparah noted that the advisory opinion was issued in line with the commission’s mandate as provided in section 5 (l)(m)(o) of its enabling Act.

He said, “The commission calls on northern states’ governments to develop a multi-sectoral programme of action for the transfer, return and rehabilitation of Almajirai.”

“A major step towards achieving this will be an obligation on the part of affected states to put in place financial, institutional, and programmatic frameworks to urgently address the needs of the Almajirai.”

The Commission on May 27 called on the 11 northern governors to act on the Child’s Rights Act, to enable them to attend to issues affecting the Almajiri.

Recall that the northern governors recently agreed to return Almajiris to their states of origin because they want to end the system as they believed it is not in anybody’s interest.
