Federal Government Has No Power To Seize States’ Funds – Ekweremadu

The Former Deputy Senate President and the lawmaker representing Enugu-West Senatorial District, Ike Ekweremadu, on Friday stated that the Federal Government does not have the power to seize funds belonging to State Governments following the recent order signed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that President Buhari a few days ago signed an Executive Order which provides full autonomy of the States Houses of Assembly and the Judiciary.

The Nigeria Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, while reacting to the decision of the President warned states governments to comply with the Executive order, or risk their funds withheld.

The former Deputy Senate President while speaking in Enugu said, “the FG has no such powers, the Supreme Court has said so.”

Ekweremadu further stated that the contentious Infectious Disease Bill currently before the National Assembly will fail.

He stated this while speaking on Dream FM, Enugu programme ‘Political Voices’ on Friday.

The lawmaker added that “the bill is more dangerous than the infectious disease itself,” adding that “the provisions of the bill are not in tandem with our constitution.”

He said the bill will certainly not be passed.
