Energy, Food Price Hikes Looms In Nigeria, Others - AfDB

The President of Africa Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwunmi Adeshina seems to be in the messy waters of maladministration as the U.S Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, called for an independent probe into allegations by a group of whistleblowers against the AfDB President.

Naija News Understands that the ethics committee of the African Development Bank (AfDB), had earlier cleared him of all wrongdoings two weeks ago after they found no evidence to support allegations of favoritism by Adesina. According to U.S Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, a fresh and in-depth investigation must be conducted into the allegations against Mr Adesina using an independent investigator.

“We have deep reservations about the integrity of the committee’s process,” Mnuchin said. “Instead, we urge you to initiate an in-depth investigation of the allegations using the services of an independent outside investigator of high professional standing.”

Naija News recalls that U.S. criticism of the bank’s internal processes follows comments by World Bank President David Malpass in February that multilateral lenders including the AfDB tend to provide loans too quickly. The U.S. has a 6.5% stake in AFDB as the biggest non-African shareholder.
