Libyan Government Mocks Haftar’s Surprised Power Grab

Libya’s United Nation-recognised government has finally reacted to the action of the country’s military leader Khalifa Haftar.

Naija News recalls that Haftar said Monday his Libyan National Army (LNA) was accepting a “popular mandate” to rule over the country, apparently brushing aside the civilian authorities which nominally govern eastern Libya.

However, reacting to the development, the Approved  UN-Libyan government mocked and accused rival military commander Khalifa Haftar of seeking to stage a new coup after he claimed to have a “mandate” from the people to govern the country.

“It’s a farce and the latest in a long series of coups d’etat,” the Government of National Accord (GNA), which is based in the capital, Tripoli, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Libyan Government also added that What the war criminal Haftar said was a coup on the democratic path, not new but a continuation of his failed coups and to cover up his repeated defeats.

Russia’s reaction to Haftar’s Libya power grab

Meanwhile, the  Russian government, a close ally of Haftar has described the power grab as “surprising”.

According to a source from  Russian foreign ministry they were s surprised by the war lord’s action because it negets the decisions reached at a conference in Berlin in January to be implemented by Libyans themselves, with the assistance of the international community, the source said.

“We support the continuation of the political process. There is no military solution to the conflict.
