Both Manchester United and Arsenal have a great chance of returning to the UEFA Champions League next season should the 2019/2020 English Premier League season be cancelled as it stands.

If the league season is cancelled as it stands, UEFA has advised the various associations to decide clubs who will play in European competitions next year, using their coefficient scores.

Naija News reports England has only four spots up for grabs in the Champions League.

UEFA met with the 55 national associations including the English FA via video conference on Tuesday, the UK Sun reports.

Top of the agenda at the meeting was contingency plans if domestic seasons are unable to resume, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coefficient tables are compiled based on European performances over a rolling five-year period and should this option be adopted, both Arsenal and United will be making a return to the Champions League.

It will be recalled that before the league was suspended, Arsenal occupied ninth position on the table, eight points off fourth-placed Chelsea. Manchester United on its part was sitting in the fifth position.

The two clubs will join Manchester City and Liverpool in Europe’s elite competition to represent England should the league be cancelled.

However, Chelsea and Leicester, who are currently in the top four as well as Tottenham, would be forced to settle for Europa League football, while Sheffield United and Wolves would miss out on Europe altogether.
