The Nigerian Government has said it would scale-up the testing of suspected coronavirus cases to 1,500 people daily as from next week.

The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Chikwe Ihekweazu, said this at a press conference in Abuja.

Ihekweazu said Nigeria currently tests about 500 people every day and added that although the NCDC is increasing the number, it would only test specific people whose case definition fits into that of the centre.

Meanwhile, some states, including Oyo and Edo, on Tuesday complained that they were facing a shortage of testing kits for the virus.

Nigeria now has a total of 139 coronavirus cases. A tweet from NCDC on Tuesday said “As at 08:00 pm 31st March there are 139 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria. Nine have been discharged with two deaths.”
