The federal government of Nigeria has bowed to pressure and postponed the National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020.

This development was confirmed by the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, in a series of tweets on Tuesday.

He noted that the decision is not unconnected with the coronavirus outbreak in Nigeria and the need to safeguard the citizens of the country.

According to a tweet from the presidency, President Muhammadu Buhari approved the postponement of the 2020 National Sports Festival, as a precautionary move against COVID-19 after he was briefed this morning (Tuesday) by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development and the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adeleke Mamora.

Naija News recalls a third case of the virus was recorded in Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday. The case was a 30-year-old female who recently returned from the UK.

The National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020 was billed to start on the 22nd of March and end on the 1st of April.

This online medium recalls previously, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire had stated that the government does not intend to stop the commencement of the National Sports Festival in Edo State, due to the fear of coronavirus.

According to him, anyone looking suspicious would be denied entry to the venue.

Ehanire said the organizers would be made to screen everybody both participating and all the spectators, noting that at the moment, there’s no strong threat internally.
