There Is Virus In Nigeria, But It’s Not Coronavirus – Sultan Of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar has challenged the government of Nigeria to take urgent steps in addressing the challenges facing the citizens of the country.

The traditional ruler noted that what many Nigerians are facing in terms of hunger and other challenges is much more deadlier than the deadly coronavirus affecting many countries in the world.

He made the submission on Thursday at the first quarterly meeting of Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja.

The Sultan called on the government to put policies and structures in place that will impact directly on the citizens and alleviate their sufferings.

“There is a very serious virus that is killing Nigerians much higher than Coronavirus. That virus is hunger,” the sultan said.

“There is hunger virus and it’s very serious. You need to go round the country, into the villages, into the towns and see how people are really struggling to survive.

“These are very serious issues, and as religious and community leaders, we must continue to talk about these issues, and also send our recommendations to the government and watch how the government will implement the recommendations.”

It will be recalled the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday, declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic.

In February, Nigeria recorded its first case of coronavirus – an Italian who flew into the country from Milan, Italy. He has since been quarantined and receiving treatment at the Lagos facility for its treatment.
